Visiting Jesus People USA

Over the years, many people have come through our doors from a variety of backgrounds and for a variety of reasons. Some just needed a place to stay for the night -- and stayed for years. Others came, convinced community life was their calling for life -- and left the next morning. We have never actively solicited new members: we know firsthand how difficult community living is in general, and living in this community in particular, and we wouldn't wish it on anyone -- who hadn't received a specific calling from the Lord. On the other hand, you don't have to join the community to come visit and get a taste of this peculiar calling, or have your eyes opened to possibilities for ministry that you hadn't considered before. We welcome visitors of all kinds -- those who just want to stop in for a quick tour, those who wish to pitch in and help for a short or long term service project, and those who are interested in an extended experience of community life. We do ask, however, that before you make your plans you get in touch with one of our Visitor Coordinators. Our house is overstuffed most of the time, and unexpected visitors have been surprised to discover we're all filled up.

If you're in the neighborhood and want to stop by for a tour, just call ahead to the Coordinator's Office at (773) 561-2450, ext. 2310 and we'll try to arrange a time.

All visitors will be asked to fill out and send in a visitor form. (Throw in a picture of yourself if you like.)
Individual Visitor Form or Couples Visitor Form

Our visitors are provided meals and beds, but will be asked to provide personal items, such as toiletries for themselves for their first three months of stay with us. As a visitor, you will want to bring along a phone card for long distance calls, your medical insurance card, money for local transportation, as well as some spending money. You will also need to bring a sleeping bag (or bedding) and a pillow. Other things guests should bring are work shoes (if aplicable), a towel, and any special medical items they might need.

While you are visiting, the daily activities will typically consist of a combination of work/service projects -- such as helping with our feeding program, pitching in with our daily work schedules or work crews. Other opportunities might include street witnessing, Bible classes, worship services, and simply spending time with the people who live here.

Volunteering at Jesus People USA

With a variety of ongoing outreaches, both in our neighborhood and far beyond our doors, we're always in need of folks who'd like to pitch in and help carry the load. Over the years, for example, students from local colleges and seminaries have been regular volunteers at our shelter -- serving meals to homeless people, leading Bible studies, and doing general maintenance. If you're planning a trip to Chicago, or live in the area, and would like to find out if there's some area of outreach where you can help out, we invite you to join us in ministry. Below you'll find a listing of various JPUSA outreaches which could almost always use an extra hand, along with the phone number and email of a contact person who can talk to you about volunteer positions.

  • Cornerstone Community Outreach is an emergency shelter for women with children. There are opportunities to work with children in the daycare, serve meals to the homeless, help out with an overnight warming center, and do general maintenance.
Contact: Lyda Jackson at (773) 271-8163 ext. 39.

  • Friendly Towers is JPUSA's housing program for low-income Seniors. With eighty to one-hundred senior citizens living in our building, we can definitely use some fresh energy to help meet their needs -- from serving meals to house-keeping to helping with activities.
Contact: David Baumgartner at (773) 303-4200.

  • Leland House is our long-term subsidized housing for single women with children. There is always need for help with maintenance and repair.
    Contact:Pegge Taylor at (773) 561-0053.

  • And there's always plenty of ongoing projects and the daily work of maintenence, cooking, etc. around the community house.
    Contact: Tim Kleinert

One of the biggest areas of need for volunteers among the JPUSA ministries is Cornerstone Festival. There are a wide variety of needs for volunteers at the festival, from traffic control to medical professionals for the First Aid trailer to electricians and carpenters -- you name it. If you're interested in helping out (and receiving a discount on admission!) at Cornerstone, visit the Volunteer Page at the Official Festival Site, or contact Volunteer Coordinator Joan Davis for more details.

If you have a specific skill (such as in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work), and would like to donate time and labor at JPUSA wherever there are needs, or at the Cornerstone Festival, contact Tim Kleinert at (773) 303-4060.
