Our community has been loathe to commit to paper official statements of policies or internal rules. One reason has something to do with the distrust of institutions native to the counterculture from which JPUSA emerged, and has been in many ways shaped by. We've also encountered our share of churches which seemed long on letter and short on Spirit, and no doubt we've sometimes reacted with the opposite extreme. We are acutely aware of the fact that much of what makes community work (and what makes this community work) will not reduce to written policies and regulations; nevertheless, we continue struggle to find a way to articulate and preserve what we do in a way that manages to grasp some of those intangibles. Along the way, we have found it necessary for the sake of all involved to begin to create a written record of certain structures and guidelines in order to better communicate with one another as we enter into, live in, or leave the community.
These documents, like the community itself, are works-in-progress. No
doubt, they will be occasionally modified and supplemented as the need
arises in the years to come. We post on the web site here as one more
means of accountability to the larger Church and world, and so that others
may learn from our ongoing struggle to learn how people might live together
in community.
